About the Adaptive Trails Program
The Adaptive Trails Program is designed to remove barriers to outdoor recreation and make North Carolina’s state parks more welcoming for everyone, regardless of mobility, cognitive or sensory needs, or disability.
We are committed to creating outdoor experiences where individuals of all abilities can explore, connect with nature, and enjoy the physical, emotional, and social benefits of time outside. The program's long-term goals are to build adaptive trail systems, provide adaptive equipment and recreational opportunities, and share clear information about accessibility at parks so visitors can make informed decisions about their outdoor experiences.
Who does the program serve?
The Adaptive Trails Program is for anyone who may face barriers on traditional trails, including:
- People who use wheelchairs, mobility aids, or adaptive equipment
- Visitors with sensory or cognitive needs who benefit from predictable, clearly described environments
- Older adults, families with young children, and others who need gentler, more stable trail surfaces
By designing trails and services with accessibility in mind, the program supports both individuals with disabilities and the broader community.
We envision a future where all individuals, regardless of ability, can access and enjoy the full range of North Carolina’s natural landscapes. The Adaptive Trails Program will serve as a national model for inclusive outdoor recreation, connecting people to nature, fostering community, and advancing equity through thoughtfully designed and universally accessible state parks.
"Trails must support the interests and desired uses of all members of the community in order to connect diverse types of people to the outdoors, construct a sense of ownership and appreciation for outdoor spaces that helps protect the environment, and ensure that economic benefits are broadly and equitably shared. A variety of voices and perspectives should be at the table throughout the process of trail development in order to ensure that the three interconnected aspects of sustainability are fully realized."
